Winter officially starts today but that didnt keep Mother Nature from disrupting the beginning of the high school holiday tournament season on Friday.
Along with a handful of regular season boys hockey and girls basketball matchups, a total of six tournaments involving NAC squads were wiped out due to the massive storm that is expected to deposit a wintry mix across the entire North Country and much of the Northeastern United States over the next two-three days.
Also postponed in anticipation of the unsettled weather conditions was todays North Country Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Gouverneur Central, which was moved to Monday starting at 10 a.m.
Boys hockey games postponed and yet to be rescheduled were Potsdam at Ogdensburg, Massena at Salmon River and Tupper Lake at Saranac Lake.
MASSENA GIRLS HOCKEY
The Massena girls hockey tournament, which included Potsdam Central, Williamsville and Bellows Free Academy of Vermont has been reduced to a single game this morning between the two Section 10 rivals starting at 11:45 a.m.
The St. Lawrence Central Holiday Boys Hockey Tournament is now slated to be just a pair of games this afternoon with Saranac Central taking on the Islanders at noon and the host Larries facing off against Norwood-Norfolk at 2:15 p.m. in a game that will also serve as an NAC Division II matchup.
The Cindy Brady Memorial Tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Heuvelton Central as been postponed until Monday and Friday respectively. On Monday, Lisbon and St. Lawrence Central will tip off in JV play at 11 a.m. followed the Varsity game at 12:45 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. Heuvelton and Colton-Pierrepont will play in JVs with the varsity to follow at 4:15 p.m. The Varsity Consolation and Championship are set for 9 a.m. and noon on Friday.
The Ben Cordwell Girls Basketball Tournament for Friday and Saturday at OFA was postponed with no rescheduled date. Those match-ups included Hammond against Madrid-Waddington and Ogdensburg against Canton.
The Heather Provost Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament at St. Regis Falls as been postponed on Friday and Saturday.
Friday games would have included: Norwood-Norfolk and St. Regis Falls and Hermon-DeKalb and Parishville-Hopkinton. NAC Central Division girls basketball games slated for Friday pitting Potsdam at Franklin Academy and Salmon River at Gouverneur were postponed and had yet to be rescheduled.
The Canton Central boys hockey team was slated to make its annual trip to Vermont to compete at a tournament hosted by Bellows Free Academy but the event has been canceled with no make-up date planned.
