Grinch Greets Kids At Massena Breakfast benefit

MASSENA — The Grinch descended Mount Crumpet Saturday to visit Massena, but wasn’t able to steal Christmas from the dozens of children at the Massena Elks Lodge, 20 Bowers St.

The eggs and ham weren’t green but the Grinch certainly was, during the 9 a.m. to noon breakfast fundraiser for the Massena Public Library.

“We were thinking of doing breakfast with Santa, but there’s so many of those,” Library Director Elaine Dunne-Thayer said.

Ms. Dunne-Thayer said this was the first major fundraising event the library has held and because of the ice storm and slick road conditions, she didn’t expect a full house.

“We thought we probably wouldn’t get the crowd we had hoped for,” she said. But the attendance was far larger than expected.

“We ran out of eggs and already went to the store to buy more,” Ms. Dunne-Thayer said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout.”

By 10 a.m., more than 185 people had already filled their plates at the buffet. At $20 per family, the fundraiser was deemed a huge success.

Area businesses also donated 19 raffle baskets to help the library raise money.

Ms. Dunne-Thayer said the library was having “budget issues” and needed to come up with a fundraiser that would help boost the budget.

“We’ve been very fortunate over the years to be well supported by our town,” she said. “Like many of the other small towns, we’re struggling a little bit because they just can’t fund the library like they used to. So, we’ve had to look beyond the regular sources and think outside the box.”

Ms. Dunne-Thayer said Elks volunteers cooked the breakfast.

“This time of year it’s asking people to support yet another fundraiser, but we’ve got really good support from our community for our library,” she said.

Jessica L. LeRoux brought her four children to dine with the Grinch Saturday. Kaiden R., 7, Conner E., 6, Sophia R., 4, and Olivia A., 4, all had matching Santa hats on as they sat at a round table with their mom, polishing off some breakfast. They said they wanted to visit with the Grinch to make his heart grow.

“I absolutely love the library and we go there all the time,” Mrs. LeRoux said. “So, anything to support them is great.”
