Hundreds of thousands of homeowners across the state will soon be receiving telephone calls reminding them to register for the basic school tax relief, or STAR, program, according to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

“The deadline of Dec. 31, 2013 is quickly approaching,” said Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Thomas H. Mattox in a news release. “We’re reaching out to hundreds of thousands of homeowners who haven’t registered with a simple message — act soon to avoid losing this valuable benefit.”

The state is asking homeowners to register for the exemption in an effort to crack down on those who may have registered multiple homes in the past. Only one residence may be registered.

In Jefferson County, 78 percent of eligible homeowners have registered, while 82 and 81 percent have registered in Lewis and St. Lawrence counties, respectively.

Homeowners may register online at www.tax.ny.gov or by phone at (518) 457-2036.
