Tuesday flights canceled at Watertown International; Wednesday flights as scheduled

All flights into and out of the Watertown International Airport have been canceled Tuesday, according to Airport Manager Grant W. Sussey.

The next flight is scheduled to depart for Chicago O’Hare Wednesday at 7:20 a.m., Mr. Sussey said.

Recovery at the Watertown International Airport came in fits and starts Tuesday, as staff continued to scrape out from under a storm that left the north country coated with an inch and a half of ice.

“An ice storm is one of the most challenging weather events we can have,” said Mr. Sussey, who had spent the weekend supervising operations at the airport, even sleeping on a cot in his office during the worst of the storm Saturday night.

The airport was still receiving power from a backup generator Tuesday morning, Mr. Sussey said.

But Mr. Sussey said the airport had recovered well, with dedicated crews working over the weekend to clear the airport’s runways and taxiways — an equivalent of 50 road lane miles — of ice and snow.

The runways and taxiways had to be plowed, treated and inspected and a written notice had to be published to pilots in order for the airport to be considered clear.

The airport lost power Sunday night and the generator kicked in, supplying power to the airfield lighting system and the heating systems inside the terminal.

The cancelled flights left many passengers in limbo as holiday travel schedules had to be altered.

The airport is serviced by American Eagle airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines.

Calls to American Airlines were not returned Tuesday.
