Clayton sewerline project needs DEC approval

CLAYTON — Plans for a new sewer line to connect more than 100 residents to the town’s treatment facility and discontinue the use of aging private septic tanks have been sent to the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The plans were sent to DEC in early December and Robert J. Campany, town engineer and co-owner of Fourth Coast Inc., said the town expects to hear back this winter if the plans have been approved and work can begin in the summer. Mr. Campany said over the years, the quality of the septic tanks has continuously gotten worse and the new system will alleviate the pollution.

“Because of the heavy clays and bedrock in that area, many septic systems don’t work well,” Mr. Campany said. “The new system will be a lot better.”

The project to develop 3 miles of main line running along Route 12 from east Clayton to Fishers Landing is estimated to cost $5.35 million.

Town Supervisor Justin A. Taylor said in 2007 the town started studying the feasibility of creating a single system for the more than 167 equivalent dwelling units on the line.

“Right now, the whole area has private septic tanks,” Mr. Taylor said. “There have been overflows in the tanks and water quality has suffered.”

The 167 units should add about 160 users to the town’s wastewater treatment on Barton Lane, Mr. Campany said.

Easement agreements are being expedited by Fourth Coast Inc. and St. Lawrence Engineering.

The septic system will provide hookups to homes and businesses, including a few hotels, a mini-golf course and a distillery.
