Habitat seeks future homeowners for Carthage build

CARTHAGE — Thousand Islands Area Habitat for Humanity is seeking future homeowners.

At the request of Habitat, the Carthage Industrial Development Corp., owner of the former Braman Manufacturing Co. property on Alexandria Street, is working to prepare the site for construction of homes. The village of Carthage rezoned the 3.75-acre parcel to R-3 to enable the use of the lot for housing. The village also agreed to install the needed sewer and water service to the property. The CIDC has hired Aubertine and Currier Architects, Engineers & Land Surveyors PLLC of Watertown to work with Habitat to develop a subdivision design for the property. It is projected that the village could be able to begin work on the infrastructure in the spring and building could begin in September.

Habitat works with proposed low-income homeowners to build houses with no-interest mortgages or innovative financing methods. The mission of the local organization, founded in 1994, is to “eliminate poverty housing in the Thousand Islands area” and to help move people from inadequate or unsafe conditions.

Habitat uses a volunteer workforce to aid families in building “a simple, decent home.”

According to the Habitat brochure, families qualify based on their need for housing, willingness to partner with Habitat and ability to pay the mortgage. Each prospective homeowner is required to complete a minimum of 300 to 500 hours of “sweat equity” working with volunteers before moving into their Habitat home.
