CANTON — The U.S. Census Bureau has released five-year estimate data for St. Lawrence County villages and towns, which is available at The county Planning Office has aggregated data, which is available at

Some of the information provided includes:

n The median age in St. Lawrence County matches the national figure of 37.2, slightly younger than the state figure of 38 years.

n At 50.9 percent to 49.1 percent, there are more men than women in the county.

n Single-family detached homes make up 69.7 percent of all housing in the county. The state average for these units is 42.1 percent.

n More than 50 percent of housing in the county was constructed before 1960.

n Fourteen percent of homes in the county are heated with wood, compared with 2 percent statewide.

n At $43,745, median household income in the county was lower than for the state as a whole at $57,683.

n Poverty in the county, at 18.5 percent, was higher than for the rest of the state, which was 14.9 percent.
