A Watertown city firetruck had a bit of a problem coming back from a call Thursday morning — a ball joint on the passenger side broke, causing the vehicle to be stranded for a few hours.

The mishap occurred at 11:45 a.m. along Washington Street. A tow truck from a Syracuse garage arrived a few hours later.

“I’ve never seen a firetruck go like that,” Fire Chief Dale C. Herman said.

The firetruck was returning from a report of a gas odor in the 800 block of Myrtle Avenue, the chief said.

Chief Herman does not know how much it will cost to repair or how long the truck will be off the road. He also does not know what caused the ball joint to fail or the extent of damage from the firetruck banging down on the pavement.

Two other city firetrucks of the same type also will be out of use until a mechanic examines them today, the chief said.
