Hammond Economic Development Committee off to a great start

HAMMOND — It’s been an eventful first year for the Business & Economic Development Group of Hammond & Chippewa Bay.

Since the group first met in March, it has established a farmer’s market and website. Members are hoping to expand on that progress next year with two new events: River Weekend and business development workshops.

Volunteers are being sought to serve on the event committee for River Weekend, economic development group Co-Chairwoman Erica C. Demick said Thursday.

The details of the weekend would be established by the event committee, which will include a board member of the larger committee, Ms. Demick said.

“It could include fireworks over Singer Castle and a full day of events that bring in residents from inside and outside the area, who will enjoy interacting with businesses, vendors, food and encouraging some form of competition,” she said.

Ms. Demick said she anticipates that the River Weekend will be held in August so as to not “overshadow other events going on.”

Group members said they hope River Weekend will bring recognition to the area, drawing tourists and providing an economic boost to businesses.

With the help of SUNY Canton’s Small Business Development Center, Ms. Demick currently is working on a series of workshops that will cover a range of topics relevant to the business community:

n Buying & Selling an Existing Business — Long & Short Term Planning for a Profitable Transition.

n Get on the Map — Business Listings & Customer Review Sites.

n E-Commerce Training Series — Learn the basics of e-commerce and how your business can improve its current e-commerce strategy or just get started. This series of workshops will help business owners understand the world of business on the web while providing practical tips and hands-on guidance with exposure to website design and creation, social networking, security and compliance issues, search engine optimization, etc.

The group is looking for more vendors for its farmer’s market, which starts in early summer and ends in early fall. For more information, email

The group also is developing a slogan or tagline for the Hammond-Chippewa Bay area.

The slogan will be featured on new signs that will sit at the town’s entrances.

There are more than 15 possible slogans to choose from on the economic development group’s website and even a spot to add your own:

“We are still open to suggestions,” Ms. Demick said.

Some sample slogans include:

n Hidden Gem of the 1000 Islands and Black Lake

n Natural Wonder of the St. Lawrence

n Emerald Fields between Black Lakes and Blue Rivers

The group is available on Facebook at

The committee has 52 members.

“We are still encouraging local businesses to add their company to our general listing,” Ms. Demick said. “We have identified that there about 122 businesses within the community.”
