Cold weather, snow to hit New Year’s week

The New Year is expected to usher in a cold snap.

Lake-enhanced snow is expected Tuesday, with several inches of accumulation forecast, according to a National Weather Service hazardous weather outlook issued Sunday for Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties. Winds gusts as high as 31 mph are expected Tuesday.

Very low temperatures are expected later in the week, with lows of 10 to 20 below Thursday and Friday accompanied by “bitterly cold wind chills,” the advisory states.

In St. Lawrence County, the NWS is calling for 1 to 4 inches of heavy, wet snow by early Monday across Northern New York and into the Champlain Valley, then lows of well below zero by midweek, with wind chill values on Tuesday night into Wednesday that may approach 20 to 30 below zero. The snow could cause additional power outages on the heels of last weekend’s ice storm, and a flash freeze is possible Monday morning, the advisory adds.
