Great Bend - Mervin P. Piere, 93, of Great Bend, died Friday, December 27, 2013, in the Carthage Area Hospital where he has been a patient for two weeks.

Mervin was born in Bertha, Minnesota on June 4, 1920, the son of the late Henry and Ruth Deadrick Piere. He served in the Army from June of 1942 to October of 1945. He married the former Anna Tymoczko on January 15, 1944 at St. Rita’s Church in Deferiet. Anna died on February 19, 2003.

Mervin retired as a Superintendant with the St. Regis Paper Company in Deferiet where he worked for over forty years. His hobbies included working on his home and lawn and taking care of his large vegetable garden. He was a life member of the American Legion Post # 789 of Carthage and a member of St. Rita’s of Cascia Church in Deferiet.

He is survived by a sister-in-law and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Anna, a son Richard Piere who died on February 22, 1963, a sister, Marguerite Edwards and two brothers, Willis and Donald Piere.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 2nd at 11:00 AM at St. Rita’s of Cascia Church in Deferiet with the Rev. Robert L. Decker, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in Black River Cemetery. Calling hours with precede the funeral from 9:30am – 11:00am at the church. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Rita’s of Cascia Church, Deferiet.
