Watertown psychology group to change name and location

Danser and Knudsen Psychological Services will receive a new name and location in the new year.

The name change of the psychology group to Rubenzahl, Knudsen & Associates Psychological Services reflects the growth of staff and 2011 departure of practice founder Donald B. Danser, while the relocation from 531 Washington St. to Washington Summit, outer Washington Street, will bring more clinic space and improved patient confidentiality, according to Thomas E. Knudsen, practice partner.

“We’ve always had a lot of referrals, we just didn’t have enough therapists to cover them,” Mr. Knudsen said. “Now we’ll have the capability of taking more. One key thing has been the transition from Mercy (Behavioral Health) shutting down to the new clinic. People are having trouble getting service. At this point, we are not taking as many referrals, but once we have our building open we’ll be able to.”

Making the transition from about 1,600 square feet of office space to about 3,600 square feet of new office space at Washington Summit will allow part-time therapists to become full-time, offer a larger waiting room and leave the group with room to expand. The new space will be an add-on to the building where New York Heart Center is.

Mr. Knudsen said he’d like to recruit another psychologist, although it has been hard the past several years to recruit behavioral health professionals to Northern New York.

“Not everyone wants to live in the north country,” he said.

Finding people who grew up in the area but went away for a post-secondary education may be the key, he said.

The new Rubenzahl, Knudsen & Associates Psychological Services should be open by late February or early March. Mr. Knudsen and Samuel Rubenzahl, the practice’s other principal partner, will lease the space, but have the option to buy the building down the road, according to Michael E. Lundy, chief executive officer of Lunco Corp., Carthage, which is building the office.

Mr. Lundy, partner with Washington Summit Associates, said many business owners are interested in establishing themselves at Washington Summit because of the proximity to other medical professionals in surrounding buildings. Other bonuses, he said, are ample parking and a fresh start with new construction and technologies.

Mr. Knudsen said the psychology group will receive an updated look, with new furniture and decor to accommodate clients and the staff of two receptionists, two full-time psychologists, two part-time psychologists, three full-time master’s level therapists, and four part-time therapists.

“It’s a more pleasant environment,” he said of the Washington Summit location. “Hopefully it’ll be quieter because it’ll be less traffic from other offices.”

Mr. Lundy said as the psychology group expressed interest in relocating to Washington Summit, he also wanted to maximize building space, so there will be an additional 1,200 square feet of office space for lease for any business. According to a recent news release, Washington Summit Associates will also have a group conference/meeting room and video center in the second floor of the adjoining New York Heart Center building to be used for Washington Summit and LUNCO presentations and meetings with clients.
