Jean R. Chamberlain also known as Jean Hastings died Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Geer Nursing Home in Canaan, Connecticut. She was 96. She was born to Ethel and Ben Ebersole in Detroit and grew up in Elkhart, Indiana. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in music education. She and her first husband, attorney Calvin Chamberlain, lived in Sandy Creek, New York, until Mr. Chamberlains death in 1985. In 1987 she married Robert Hastings, a retired editor of Holstein World magazine, also of Sandy Creek. Mr. Hastings died in 1991.
During her working years, Mrs. Chamberlain taught music in the local schools and privately. She performed with cello, piano and her voice throughout high school, college and adult life. She was active in the music of the Sandy Creek United Methodist Church. During her retirement years in Dunedin, Florida, she played cello both the Suncoast Symphony and the Tampa Bay Symphony. She performed with the St. Andrews Presbyterian choir and bell choirs. Through their mutual love for music, Mrs. Chamberlain found companionship with fellow musician Arthur Sahr, a union that the two enjoyed for seven years. Many evenings she enjoyed accompanying his tenor voice until his death in 2006 at the age of 94. She moved to Geer Village in 2007 and continued to share the joy of music with her son, Neal, his wife Julie, and her grandchildren, Hannah and Ethan of PO Box 234 Ashley Falls, MA 01222.
She is also survived by her other two sons and their families. Jeffrey is a retired lawyer living in Nassau, NY with his partner, Mary. Kevin is a geologist at the University of Wyoming, his wife Diane, and children, Melanie and Ryan, live in Laramie, WY.
A memorial service is scheduled at 2 PM January 4th in Geer Village Chapel, Canaan, CT. There will be a graveside service in Sandy Creek during the summer with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.
