LISBON - A new Caterpillar loader will arrive at the town garage within three months after the Lisbon Town Council voted Tuesday to approve its purchase.

Costing the town roughly $84,500 the loader will replace a 2004 Caterpillar currently in use by the Highway Department with more than 6,000 hours logged.

The money will come out of the highway fund.

Highway Superintendent Timothy Dow said the new loader will have everything the town needs with it and will have interchangeable attachments that can be used with the department’s two other loaders. Mr. Dow said the new loader, which includes a backhoe, is bigger than the current model in use.

Town Councilor Nathanael Putney said he didn’t want to see the town trade in the old loader recommending instead the town attempt to sell it on its own. Town Supervisor James W. Armstrong said he believes people will be interested in buying used from a municipality because of the detailed service notes.

The town is hoping to get more than $20,000 for the old loader to help bring down the cost of the replacement.

Town Councilors Alan D. Dailey and Gary J. Jarvis joined Mr. Putney and Mr. Armstrong in voting to buy the new loader and attempt to sell the old one on their own.

Town Councilor Susan M. Duffy was absent.

Mr. Armstrong said “we’re in no hurry” to sell the old machine and Mr. Putney noted that the town will be able to reject bids that fall short of what they need. The town will begin advertising the old loader within the next several weeks.

In 2012 the town purchased two Caterpillar loaders. In total the town has three loaders.
