A total of about 57,000 tons of salt has been placed on roadways in Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Franklin and Clinton counties by state Department of Transportation crews so far this season.

The numbers are in line with averages for the region, according to DOT spokesman Michael R. Flick. He said the department uses about 150,000 tons each season.

“Our year-to-year averages stay pretty consistent,” Mr. Flick said. “It seems that if we have a late start to winter, it hangs around or gets icy. If it starts early, we get a warm spell, so Mother Nature always seems to find a way to even things out.”

He said in an average season, the department uses 32,000 tons of salt in Jefferson County, 23,000 tons in Lewis County and 38,000 tons in St. Lawrence County.

The first day of salting for the region was Oct. 24, in Lewis County.
