Indian River Middle School student charged in bomb threat

PHILADELPHIA — A 12-year-old Indian River Central School student was charged by state police in connection with a bomb threat made Monday morning at the middle school.

State police arrested the student on an unspecified juvenile charge and subsequently released him to his parent pending further action with the Jefferson County Probation Department, according to a news release. His name was not released because he is a minor, troopers said.

Superintendent James Kettrick said that the middle school was evacuated and that students returned about 9:30 a.m. after state police and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department K-9 units completed a sweep of the building and found nothing.

With assistance from the state police Computer Crimes Unit and the Jefferson County sheriff’s school resource officer, investigators determined the student was responsible for making the threat, state police said.

Indian River students were dismissed early Monday because of worsening weather, not because of the bomb threat. The district experienced intermittent power outages and the loss of phones twice Monday morning, Mr. Kettrick said.
