OFA Looks to follow tournament momentum

The OFA Wrestling team delivered the best tournament showing by the Blue Devil program in recent memory over the weekend placing second in Peru at the two-day 45th annual Peru Central Invitational.

The Blue Devils registered 202 points to place second to the host Indians’ 222.5 in the 20-team field and earned the runner-up spot over Massena (182). Massena has handed OFA (2-1) its only loss in the unfolding Northern Conference season.

Coach Bill Mitchell’s Devils will look to follow up the momentum of the tournament showing in hosting unbeaten Gouverneur on Wednesday night.

Leading the Devils at the tournament was Brody Sheppard who was voted as the Most Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler (99-152) after winning the 120-pound title. Sheppard went 3-0 and his 8-6 overtime win over Skylar Cameron of Massena was voted the Most Exciting Match of the Tournament.

To reach the finals Sheppard decisioned Alec Denney of Massena 8-2 and Chaz Agen of Canton 16-3.

Registering second place finishes for OFA were: Cordell David at 99 pounds, Tanner LaPiene at 113 pounds and Bailey Phelps at 145 pounds.

David pinned Chris Recore of Malone and Brian Plourde of Massena to reach the 99-pound finals where he fell to Peru’s Carson Dobozy in classy 6-4 decision.

LaPiene and Nathan Marshall of Massena staged their second intense encounter of the season in the 113-pound finals, The Raider standout repeated a dual meet win with an 8-5 decision and became a four-time champion at the tournamemt.

LaPiene reached the finals with pins over Teddy Tanzuck of Auable Valley and Quintin Jackson of Peru.

Phelps posted three straight wins to reach the 145-pound finale where he fell to Jamiel Stapleton of Malone 4-0. To reach the finals Phelps posted a 12-0 major decision over Aaron Bell of Peru, posted a 6-2 decision over Dominic Hahr of St. Johnsbury, Vt. and recorded a fall over Austin Amo of Massena.

Third place finishes for the Devils were posted by Nathan Murdock who went 3-1 at 152 pounds, Jordan McCormick who went 3-1 at 182 pounds and Alex Cole who recorded a team-high four wins by going 4-1 at 170 pounds.

Murdock decisioned Connor Gobielle of Champlain Valley Union of Vermont 6-3 in his third place match, Cole pinned Keith Chirstensen of Ausable Valley in his third place match and McCormick pinned Ian Strachman of Spaulding. Vt 24 seconds into his third place match.

Taking fourths were: Zach Roberts who went 2-2 at 106 pounds, Adam Rickett who went 3-2 at 138 pounds and Cody-Allen David who went 2-2 at 160 pounds with the fastest fall of the tournament which he delivered in eight seconds.

Rounding out the OFA lineup were: Chris Cole who went 1-2 taking fifth at 99 pounds,Josh Wangler who went 3-2 taking fifth at 132 pounds, Cory Wiers who went 0-2 at 145 pounds, Allen Smithers who went 1-3 taking sixth at 152 pounds, Tyler Eaton who went 0-3 taking sixth at 160 pounds, Will Pearson who went 2-3 to place sixth at 220 pounds and Grewall Gurjok who went 0-2 at 220 pounds. Pearson won two of his first three matches by pin but lost the last two because of injury default.

BROWN WINS AT 106

Hermon-DeKalb student Ryan Brown claimed the 106-pound title leading Canton to fifth place with 106 pounds. Brown decisioned Brandon Goddeau of Peru 10-6 in his title match.

Massena produced three champions in Nathan Marshall at 113 pounds, Jeremy Malone at 195 pounds and Nolan Terrance of Massena at 285 pounds.

Marshall decisioned Tanner LaPiene of OFA 8-6 (see above), Malone dropped Justin Neyer of Peru 5-1 and Terrance pinned Kenny Rivers of Ausable Valley at 1:06.
