MASSENA - They say a picture is worth a thousand words.
In this case, it could be worth $100.
Entries havent been flying for the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerces photography contest thats being staged as part of the 2014 Massena Winter Carnival. And, with the Friday deadline fast approaching, chamber officials are hoping to see a slew of entries come to the office.
Penny (Pullmain, associate director) has gotten a lot of requests and sent out a lot of information. But people havent sent pictures in. We have had a lot of interest in it, we just havent gotten as much response. They still have time, but time is running out very quickly, chamber board President Miriam S. Catapano said.
As of Tuesday, fewer than a handful of entries had been submitted for the contest.
There is no entry fee, and entry forms can be found on the chamber website at www.massenachamber.com. The only requirement is that the submitted pictures be a scenic view of the north country, taken within 90 miles of the town of Massena.
It doesnt have to be a winter scene. It could be any scenic shots of the area. It could have been taken any season. Maybe thats why people are confused. We live in such a beautiful area with four seasons. Its surprising more people dont have photographs that they would want to put in. There have been other photo contest in the area where people have submitted beautiful shots, Ms. Catapano said.
With so many people carrying around cameras these days - including those on their cell phones - she said its surprising that some of the scenic photographs that amateur and professional photographers have taken havent been submitted for the contest.
Its for amateurs and professionals. I know there are a lot of photographers out there. Kids enjoy taking pictures now with their cell phones and the quality of photos that come off the cell phones is wonderful. Theres no real reason people shouldnt be submitting. What I really find disappointing is the lack of interest, she said.
The contest features two age groups: grades kindergarten through 12 and adults, with first, second and third prizes being awarded in each age group.
The first-place winner in the adult category will earn $100, while second place earns $75 and third place earns $50.
In the childrens category, first place earns a $100 gift certificate to the St. Lawrence Centre mall. Second place wins a $75 gift certificate to the mall, and third place wins a $50 gift certificate to the mall.
Photographs and entry forms can be dropped off at the chamber office, 16 Church St.
The entries will be on display from Jan. 16-23 at the chamber office and can be viewed and voted on during chamber office hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office will also be open until 8 p.m. Jan. 21 for viewing.
A panel of judges, as well as the general public, will be allowed to vote. There will be a limit of one vote per person. All voting and judging must be complete by 12 p.m. Jan. 23.
Winners will be announced and their photos will be on display Jan. 25-26 at the Frank S. McCullough, Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center & Boat Launch.
