Marine from Gouverneur killed in North Carolina car accident

GOUVERNEUR — A Gouverneur native who recently graduated from Marine Corps boot camp has died in a car accident in North Carolina.

Shannon M. Way, Gouverneur, said she learned of the death of her son, Skyler D. Way, about 4 a.m. Wednesday. Pfc. Way and a fellow Marine were found dead Tuesday night in a partially submerged vehicle in a water-filled ditch off Catfish Lake Road in Craven County. Pfc. Way was stationed at Camp Lejeune.

He had last been heard from about 9:50 p.m. Monday.

Mrs. Way filed a missing persons report through the Marine Corps.

Marine Corps personnel were prohibited from using Catfish Lake Road, which is unpaved, unless they had a legitimate purpose such as hunting or fishing, because of its curves, blind spots, potholes and absence of lighting.

According to news reports from the area, five Marines have been killed in accidents on the road since 2009, as well as five other people.

A 2012 graduate of Gouverneur Central School, Pfc. Way graduated from boot camp Dec. 14.

He had been a wrestler since the age of 5, played football, was close to his family and loved to hunt and fish, Mrs. Way said.

“Fast cars were my son’s life,” she said.

According to investigators quoted in television news accounts of the accident, Pfc. Way was the driver and was speeding when he lost control. The car ran off the road to the left and overturned in a canal.

Pfc. Way and Lance Cpl. Nick Buscarnera, 19, Mastic Beach, Suffolk County, were members of 2nd Supply Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 25.
