Waddington replaces council member

WADDINGTON — Town council members voted to make Shirley L. Robinson one of their own again Monday.

Mrs. Robinson, who has served on the board for six terms since 1989, lost re-election in November to newcomers Shaun L. Prentice and Patricia B. Van Patten.

Council members on Monday unanimously appointed Mrs. Robinson to replace Robert Dalton, who vacated his seat in November after being elected town highway superintendent.

“In my opinion, she only lost by one vote, and that in itself was enough to consider her,” newly elected Town Supervisor Sandy R. Wright said Tuesday. “There were a lot of people that voted for her and there was a vacancy. It made sense to put her back on the board, especially with all of the new members we have.”

Town council members had the option of leaving the position vacant until an election in November.

“I think it is absolutely important to have as many voices from different backgrounds involved as possible — the more people involved the better,” Mrs. Wright said.

Since Mrs. Robinson was appointed to the council, she will have to run for election November to serve out the remaining year of Mr. Dalton’s term, which expires in 2015.

The following town council members were appointed as representatives to committees during Monday’s reorganizational meeting:

■ Mrs. Wright was appointed to serve as Waddington’s representative in St. Lawrence Local Government Task Force. She was also appointed as the town’s representative to the rescue squad.

■ Mrs. Van Patten was appointed as representative to the Recreation Committee.

■ Town Council member Travis McKnight was appointed as the town’s representative to the Campground, Agriculture, and Cemetery committees.

■ Mr. Prentice was appointed representative to the Energy Working Group Committee.

■ Mrs. Robinson will continue to serve as Economic Development Committee chairwoman and representative to the Hepburn Library Board of Trustees.
