The Ogdensburg Public Library Board of Trustees is expected to accept the resignation of director

Wayne L. Miller at its monthly board meeting next week.

The trustees will not officially comment on the resignation until then, according to Mathew P. Duprey, the board’s vice president.

“The library board cannot act on accepting Wayne’s resignation until our regularly scheduled board meeting on Jan. 16,” he said. “It is anticipated that his resignation will be accepted at that time, and the board will release an official statement after that meeting.”

Mr. Miller, 63, submitted a letter of resignation to the board last month after five years as director.

He cited as reason for his decision dissatisfaction over his employment contract not being renewed after it expired on Dec. 31, 2012.

In a Dec. 29 email, Mr. Miller said that a “lack of progress toward renewal” convinced him that it was time to go.

Mr. Miller’s expired contract was for three years.

Mr. Miller’s last day at the library is Jan. 22. Until then, his schedule will balance going to work - Monday included - with taking unused vacation and personal time.

He said he hasn’t yet determined what he will do after he leaves the library. But he likes the idea of doing something that contributes to the community.

“I’m just going to take a deep breath and figure out what I’m going to do,” he said.

Mr. Miller was library director since December 2008. He succeeded David A. Franz, who retired after holding the job for 22 years.

The library director’s Ogdensburg City Council-approved salary for 2014 was set at $65,000. A new director’s annual compensation will likely be negotiated.

Mr. Miller is a native of Franklin County. He and his wife, Dr. Sally White, lived in Ogdensburg for several years during the 1980s. He was during that time senior medical librarian at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center. Dr. White was the physician for the psychiatric center’s Mobile Geriatrics Team.

Before coming to the Ogdensburg library, Mr. Miller worked as library/media specialist at Franklin Academy in Malone. He was also employed at the libraries of SUNY Plattsburgh and Pennsylvania State University, State College, Pa.
