MASSENA - St. Marys and St. Josephs Church have been granted permission to subdivide its property on Bayley Road into three separate parcels of land.
Representatives from the church came to the villages Planning Board meeting Wednesday to seek approval for the subdivision, a necessity to finalize the sale of the building that will become the home of the Boys and Girls Club.
One parcel will be utilized for the social hall building that is being sold, one for the church, and one for the recreation area.
Board member Roger Bennett abstained from the vote.
Im going to abstain because I feel that we dont have the owners here. I know theyre trustees, but we always ask that people come that are the ones that are holding the deed basically and theyre not here tonight. So I am going to abstain, Mr. Bennett said.
The parish is owned by all of the parishioners. The deed is held I think in Ogdensburg, so the bishop would have to come, trustee John H. Lamay responded. (The parish) is all in favor of it as far as I know. I havent heard one complaint about not selling it. Everybody feels that its for a good cause. Its not for something thats going to be causing problems.
Mr. Bennett pointed out that he was not against the purchase of the building or the subdivision of land, but felt uncomfortable proceeding without the owners of the building.
The Massena Boys & Girls Club finalized the $125,000 purchase of the St. Josephs Social Hall on Bayley Road in December to use at its home.
The three parcels are located at 28 Bayley Road, 30 Bayley Road, and 72 Malby Road.
Representing the church at the meeting on Wednesday were Mr. Lamay and church secretary Tammy Besio.
