HAMMOND The Town Council has given the Hammond Fire Department the OK to begin construction on a banquet hall and community center.
The town board voted in favor of waiving the $1,000 building permit fee at a meeting Wednesday so the department could begin construction on the hall.
Waving the permit fee would mean the fire department would have enough funds available to begin construction in the spring, Fire Chief John B. Bass said in December.
The council held off on waiving the fee until it received approval from the Association of Towns.
The town board has the power to determine fees and waive them as such by way of resolution, Councilman Douglas E. Delosh said. The only thing that we need to say is that there must be a reasonable basis for said exemption. And thats why we said it will be providing a much-needed venue.
I think its a good thing we can help them out and that it will benefit the community as a whole, Councilman Howard Demick said.
The banquet hall will be located outside, but next to the fire hall at 300 Lake St., Mr. Bass said. Once the final plans are drawn up, the squad is hoping to begin construction in the spring. Mr. Bass said last month he hoped the project would be completed by the end of summer.
The fire department is still looking for donations for the hall. To donate, call 324-6666.
