New Bremen council looking to fill vacant seat

NEW BREMEN — The Town Council is seeking candidates to temporarily fill a board seat vacated by Councilman Matthew E. Bush, who resigned effective Jan. 1.

In his resignation letter, Mr. Bush did not detail his reason for resigning, according to Town Clerk Elizabeth B. Jones.

The board plans to make an appointment from a pool of interested applicants to serve through the remainder of 2014.

Mr. Bush’s term does not expire until December 2015. In November, an election is required by law, according to Anne M. Nortz, Lewis County’s Republican election commissioner, to fill the unexpired term.

Supervisor Peter J. Keys said the board was not interested in leaving the seat open, as almost a full year remains before an election would seat a new council member.

“The public deserves to have a full board with decisions made by multiple people,” he said.

In November 2015, the seat again will be open for candidates to run for a full four-year term.

Interested candidates must be registered to vote in the town of New Bremen and should send a letter of interest with qualifications to Mr. Keys at 8420 Route 812, Lowville, N.Y. 13367 or by email to

The deadline for applicants is Jan. 30.
