Henderson apartment complex garners $390,000 federal grant

HENDERSON — A project to rehabilitate the 24-unit Henderson School Apartments complex, which houses seniors and disabled individuals, has been awarded a $390,000 grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York’s affordable housing program.

The renovation project at the complex, 12541 Harbor View Drive, will include the installation of a roof, heating system and windows, and exterior repairs, according to a press release issued by the bank. The complex is owned by Christopher Community, a Syracuse-based nonprofit property management company that specializes in housing for seniors, families and disabled people in upstate New York. Rent for tenants at the Henderson complex is subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Grant funding secured by First Niagara Bank for affordable housing also included $3.2 million to Snow Belt Housing Co., Lowville, which will fund its New York Rural Preservation project. That project will include rehabilitation of seven affordable housing sites located in Oswego, Saratoga, Washington and Delaware counties.

The grant funding from Federal Home Loan Bank of New York was lauded by Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, as a critical investment in the economy’s health.

“Housing upgrades at the Henderson School Apartment Complex will give seniors and the disabled healthier, safer places to live,” he said in a prepared statement. “Additionally, Snow Belt Housing’s work in neighborhoods across the 21st District will provide hundreds of families with affordable places where they can build financial savings and climb into the middle class.”

The round of grant funding is part of $35.5 million in federal Affordable Housing Program subsidies for 2013.
