POTSDAM — Potsdam High School briefly went into lockdown at about 11:20 a.m. Wednesday after a student became aggressive during an argument.

When school staff attempted to calm down two students who were arguing, one of them, a 15-year-old boy, became aggressive, according to Potsdam Central School Superintendent Patrick A. Brady.

Police were called to remove the student, and the school went into lockdown. Students and staff were ordered to stay in their areas and lock the doors.

The lockdown lasted about 10 minutes, when police arrived and escorted the student out.

After police arrived, they discovered a BB gun pistol in the student’s backpack. The student never removed the gun from the bag, nor did he threaten to use it, but it was a major violation of the school’s code of conduct, according to Mr. Brady.

“It’s very offensive to bring a gun of any type to school, and we will take appropriate action based on this violation of our code of conduct,” he said.

The student was brought to the police station for questioning, according to Potsdam Village Police Chief Kevin Bates. He was soon taken home by his foster parents.

“The school did a great job. They initiated a lockdown as a precautionary procedure,” said Potsdam Police Lt. Mark R. Murray, who is in charge of the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Once the lockdown ended, the school returned to business as usual, Mr. Brady said.
