OFA outwrestles Canton


Quick pins, high-scoring and one-point decisions produced an exciting evening of wrestling as OFA downed Canton 49-18 on Wednesday. “I made my lineup trying to get our guys the best matches possible,” said OFA Coach Bill Mitchell after his Blue Devils leveled their NAC record at 2-2 at the midpoint of the season.

“And there were a lot of good matches.”

The Devils will return to tournament action on Friday and Saturday at the Essex Junction, Vt Tournament.

“Our guys will face great competition on the weekend. There will be 35 teams there and a lot of Vermont and Maine champions.”

Against Canton (1-3), OFA won seven of nine matches wrestled including pins from Zach Roberts (106), Josh Wangler (132), Bailey Phelps (152) and Alex Cole (182).

Roberts stopped Steve DeGray in 15 seconds, Wangler pinned Zach McDonald in 56 seconds, Phelps gained a 27-second fall over Carl Hayes and Cole ended a physical matchup with Jared Caskinette in 3:16.

Tanner LaPiene outscored Ryan Brown, 11-7, at 113 pounds in a match of talented young veterans, Brody Sheppard (126) decisioned Chaz Agen 9-2, Adam Rickett (138) outscored Caleb Cunningham 18-12 in a match where both wrestlers survived two near-falls and Cody-Allen David (170) won a freewheeling 18-6 decision from Alan Clement.

Canton prevailed in two one-point decisions where John Fetcie (120) used a late reversal to nip Austin Lalonde 3-2 and Justin Foster (145) held off a late rally by Glynn Breen 7-6.

Cordell David (99) and Allen Smithers (156) received forfeits for OFA and Thomas Lumbard (220) and Zach Rottier (285) won unopposed for Canton.

In modified action Zach Bogardus recorded a pair of pins for OFA which also received falls from Don Baker, Jake Kinney and Jack Cote. Jake Pribble won an 18-10 decision.

Trevor White, Tyson Locey and Gaven Gorden recorded pins for Canton and Carson Thorton won by injury default.

In the other NAC match of the night Gouverneur downed Massena 47-30 in a match of 3-0 teams. The Wildcats won the four of the last five weight classes with Zach Ayen by pin, Joey Love by major decision, Arden Ball by decision and Justin Garrison by major decision.

Another Wildcat fall came from Jacob Beckwith and Massena received pins from Nolan Terrance, Nathan Marshall and Hunter Perrine.
