Massena girls outscore Salmon River for Central Division win


FORT COVINGTON - The Massena Central varsity girls basketball team netted a 50-43 NAC Central Division win on the road over Salmon River on Thursday.

Samanntha Villnave led the way offensively with 16 points as the Lady Raiders (5-7, 4-4) broke away from an 18-13 halftime lead to even their regular season series against the Lady Shamrocks (4-5). Jessica Rode added 10 points toward the winning effort followed by Bailee Young with nine, Jaylee Jones with five and Sophia Rusaw with four. Stephanie McKeel and Devin Kelly closed out the Massena scoresheet with three points each.

Jaden Mitchell netted 16 points in the losing cause followed by Kwiio King with 10 and Lexis Jacobs with five. Jocelyn Martin and Brittany Brooks added four points apiece. Taylor Francis chipped in three and Tsiotenhariio Herne tallied a free throw.

In the other two Central Division girls basketball matchups on Thursday, OFA turned back St. Lawrence Central 61-52 and Franklin Academy dropped Gouverneur 69-21.

OFA 61, SLC 52: In Ogdensburg, Meg Dodge (4 rebounds) netted a game-hgih 21 points and Luckie passed out eight assists to go along with 11 points and five steals as OFA built a 25-point lead before the Lady Larries battled back to make it a one-digit deficit. Erin Tooley scored a season-high seven points, Courtney Sherwin(5 points) grabbed 13 rebounds and Susie Morrow was exerted a cont with nine poinbts, six rebounds and four steals.

Lindsey Thayer (13 rebounds, 3 steals) used a series of coast-to-coast rushes with defensive rebounds to score 11 of her 19 points and sparked SLC to a 21-point fourth quarter. Jenna Kesner netted 11 points, Breanna Evans (5 assists, 4 steals) tallied 10, Bailee Gauther tallied seven and Chelsea Savage added five.


In the lone NAC Central boys basketball game on Thursday, Canton rallied to gain a 63-61 decision at home over Gouverneur.

Evan LaPoint tossed through a team-high 19 points as the Golden Bears overcame a 46-39 deficit through three quarters with a 24-15 fourth-quarter run. Louden Porter scored 10 of his 16 points in the decisive surge as Canton improved to 6-5 overall and 4-5 in the division.

Troy Gates led all scorers with 23 points for the Wildcats (4-8, 1-7). Dustin Hutton netted all of his 14 points in the second half.
