A convicted criminal from Ontario, Canada, walked across the frozen St. Lawrence River to enter the U.S. illegally Tuesday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Border patrol agents caught the unnamed 44-year-old Canadian citizen at about 10 p.m. Tuesday walking down a road on Wellesley Island.

Wearing a wetsuit under his clothes and carrying an inflatable raft in case he fell through the ice, the man navigated frozen portions of the Lake of the Isles to sneak past the U.S.-Canadian border. Officials declined to release the man’s name but said he was previously convicted of theft in Canada.

CBP spokesperson Matthew Bitterman said the border agents were on routine patrol when they ran into the man. “A lot of people don’t realize the danger they’re putting themselves in,” he said. “It was at night and no one could’ve seen if he’d fallen through the ice.”

The man was returned to Canada and has been barred from entering the United States for the next five years.
