NAC West unbeaten Hermon-DeKalb impressively checked Morristown, 70-16, on Thursday in a tune-up for a key Girls Basketball win tuning up for Tuesday’s game with Hammond (5-1) which used a strong second half to pull away From Alexandria Bay, 68-46.

In other NAC West action emerging Edwards-Knox prevailed 33-30 over Harrisville.

Hermon-DeKalb 70, Morristown 16: H-D Coach Steve Morrill credited his team for a “tremendous” first half and it all started with defense for the Demons (8-1, 6-0 NAC West) who took a 40-3 lead to intermission.“We played a tremendous first half. We played our best man to man of the season and the offense went off the defense,” said Morrill after the Lady Demons netted 10 threes and controlled a very solid Morristown club.

Leading a balanced H-D effort were: Hunter Hitchman (15 points, 3 three-pointers, 4 steals, 5 assists), Courtney Harrington (11 points, 11 rebounds), Bridget Rust (20 points, 5 3s), Paige Whitton (5 points, 5 assists), Chelsea MacKay (5 points, 7 rebounds), Morgan Stott (10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals) and Delaney Kerr (9 rebounds).Jordyn Tulley and Jessica Geddes led Morristown (2-7, 1-6 NAC West) with six and five points.

Hammond 68, Alexandria Bay 46: The 7-3 Red Devils (5-1 West) used a 21-5 third quarter advantage to overcome a 27-23 halftime deficit against visiting Alexandria Bay.

“We started out tonight very sluggish in all aspects of the game. We we not doing anything positive on the floor offensively or defensively. With that kind of effort Saturday and OFA will rout us out of their gym,” said Hammond coach Shawn Dack. “We stood around and watched Alex Bay do what ever they wanted. In order for us to become an elite team in Section X or the D-West we need to grow up fast!! In the second half we came out and did better but it still isn’t as crisp as it needs to be.”

Mikayla Horton delivered 22 points including nine in the third quarter for Hammond. Cassi Whalen tallied 18 points including seven in the quarter and Courtney Bova hit some big baskets in the fourth quarter to secure the win finishing with 12. Tayler Bowman and Aly Crosby each scored five.

Hannah Lynch fired in three threes in a 16 point effort for Alexandria Bay. Lorranie Beard, daughter of former Ogdensburg resident Matt Beard, logged 12 points while Rebecca Hitchcock added 11.

E-K 33, Harrisville 30; The Cougars (3-6, 2-5) held off the Pirates (2-7, 1-6 NAC West) in the fourth quarter. Makenzie Frary scored 10 points for Edwards-Knox. Arael Scott added eight while Katie Smith scored seven and Bartocha chippped in six. Malory Baker scored six for Harrisville.
