Potsdam public meeting will discuss recreation vote

POTSDAM - The town will answer questions and seek feedback on the future of the recreation department at a public hearing Tuesday night.

The meeting will focus on the possible creation of a special recreation taxing district, which would include all town property excluding the village of Norwood.

The town plans to take sole control of the recreation program, the cost of which has traditionally been shared with the village. The village board voted to drop funding for the program last year, leaving control to the town.

If the district is created, Norwood residents would be unaffected, while Potsdam village residents will see their village taxes drop and town taxes rise. However, those living outside of either village will face an increase of about 80 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value in their 2014 taxes.

The town plans to hold a referendum within the next few months, before the village finalizes its budget. All those who would be affected will have the chance to vote.

The public hearing will take place at the Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
