Federal regulators have increased money to fight Asian carp and protect the Great Lakes in the new appropriations bill presented to Congress.

The new bill provides $3.5 million to prevent the spread of the fish, and gives the Army Corps of Engineers the ability to take emergency measures to stop their movement from the Mississippi River into the lakes.

It also increases the amount of money allotted to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative program from $284 million to $300 million.

“This is a significant step in the right direction to preserve the natural beauty of the Great Lakes for future generations,” U.S. Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said in a statement. “By addressing the Asian carp invasion and supporting the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, we can strengthen the health of our lakes, and the health of our economy.”
