Week’s Elite: Lyme’s Ososkalo takes advantage of chances

Enesa Ososkalo of Lyme scored 45 total points in wins over Sandy Creek and Sackets Harbor and was selected as the winner of the Times Week’s Elite with 57.8 percent of the vote.

The senior guard beat out Sandy Creek boys basketball forward Zach Halsey and South Jefferson girls basketball guard Austin Stevens (both earned 14.7 percent). She has come on strong with 19 points in a 76-12 win over Sandy Creek on Jan. 14 and followed it up with a season-high 26 in 61-58 victory over Sackets Harbor on Thursday.

Ososkalo said with the team’s short bench has led to plenty of opportunities.

“With only seven girls on the team, we all have to work harder than most teams,” Ososkalo said. “That has led to our success.”

Ososkalo is averaging 15.8 points per game as the Indians have a 10-2 record and are 7-2 in the “D” Division behind first-place Copenhagen. Ososkalo credits coach Mark Wilson with the team’s success.

“He is always pushing us to do our best and giving up his free time for tournaments, games, and practices over the summer,” Ososkalo said.

She also credit her older sister Yanna for improving her game.

“Yanna and I are really close,” Ososkalo said. “I feel like we just know how to play together.”

She also added, “We’re are two very different yet similar players at the same time. We both have speed and can dribble and move the ball.”

Ososkalo is the second Lyme athlete to win the Week’s Elite award as Troy Wilson won on Dec. 16.

Week’s Elite totals: Enesa Ososkalo, Lyme 63 votes; Zach Halsey, Sandy Creek 16; Austin Stevens, South Jefferson 16; Michael Netto, Watertown, 11; Chloe Stinebrickner, South Lewis, 3.
