Honored: Addie Desmarais, medical floor registered nurse at Adirondack Medical Center, Saranac Lake, recently received the 2013 Meghan E. Handler Excellence in Nursing Award. The award is given annually to a nurse at AMC with less than three years of experience. The honor is in memory of Meghan Handler, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Handler, who died in 1998. Licensed: James S. Francia, Massena, recently passed his mortuary law exam and is now licensed by the state Department of Health’s Bureau of Funeral Directing. He completed his year’s residency with Phillips Memorial Home, owned and managed by David A. Frary, licensed funeral director, with locations in Massena, Madrid and Waddington.

Mr. Francia graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School, Norwood, and Simmons Institute of Mortuary Science, Syracuse. He is the son of Frank and Luanne Francia, Raymondville, and the father of Ethan and Leah Francia, Massena.

Raises funds: The first Breaker’s Pluck and Plunge, held Nov. 30 in Alexandria Bay, raised funds for a holiday party at Breaker’s Restaurant for the less fortunate in the community. Twelve jumpers were joined by more than 40 bystanders and special guest Frank Shattuck, actor from “Boardwalk Empire,” to help the Alexandria Bay community.

Raises funds: Abigail Davis, an elementary school student of Indian River Central School, raised more than $1,000 for the American Heart Association at a recent Jump Rope for Heart event, held at Evans Mills Primary School. Miss Davis, daughter of Yvonne Davis, raised the money in honor of her uncle, Wesley Hunt, who had a heart attack years ago. The family has a history of heart disease. The Jump Rope for Heart, sponsored by the American Heart Association and American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, is a national educational fundraising program. Miss Davis raised $500 at her first event in 2012.
