POTSDAM — A SUNY Potsdam graduate will make history at this year’s Super Bowl XLVIII.

Soprano Renee Fleming, who graduated in 1981, will perform the “The Star-Spangled Banner” at MetLife Stadium on Feb. 2, making it the first time the national anthem was sung by an opera singer, according to the Associated Press.

The 54-year-old classical musician has sung the national anthem for major sporting events in the past including the 2003 World Series at Yankee Stadium in New York.
