Katherine J. Nunn Hampton Kleinhans, 87, A River Rat often known throughout the her life as “Miss Kitty” passed away Monday morning, January 20, 2014 at Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown. She was born on The River, worked along The River and lived her life loving the River. Kitty was born Katherine J Nunn on September 23, 1926, daughter of Chester and Ruth Lewis Nunn. Before graduating from Clayton High School she watched the 1000 Island Bridge be built, allowing people to drive instead of taking the family Ferry. Her first marriage was to Donald G Hampton, and they co-owned and co-operated Hampton’s General Store in Fineview, NY on Wellesley Island for 30 years. She was also the Postmaster at the Fineview Post Office for 20 years. Donald predeceased her in 1980. By 1991, she had retired and found love again and married Eugene Kleinhans, the town Judge. Retirement did not suit her, and she went to work as the court clerk for her husband.

She was a member of Fineview United Methodist Church and was Treasurer of the Riverside Cemetery, Wellesley Island. She loved the seasons on The River, watching the ships, reading, and especially her pets. A picture of her beloved “Missy” was with her as she passed.

She is survived by her three children, David J. and Betty Hampton, Gouverneur and Cocoa, FL, LuAnn Marshall, Wellesley Island, and Dale A. Hampton and his husband, Cyril Waugh, Rochester; two step-sons, Richard Kleinhans, Florida; Eugene and Mary Kleinhans, Plessis, NY; her five grandchildren, Karen Hampton Autry, LaFargeville, Michael Hampton, Rochester, David John and Allison Hampton, Washington, DC, Katie and Justin Salter, Gouverneur, and Christopher Marshall and fiancée, Ashley DeVito, Clayton; two great grandchildren, McKenna Autry and Colton Salter; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her husbands, she was predeceased by her brother, L. Lyle Nunn.

A celebration of her life will be in the spring at the family’s convenience with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Wellesley Island. Arrangements are with Cummings Funeral Services Inc., Clayton, NY.

Donations in Katherine’s name may be made to either Wellesley Island Fire Dept., PO Box 1125, T. I. Park, NY 13692 or Jefferson County SPCA, 25056 Water St., Watertown, NY 13601. Online condolences to the family may be made at http://www.cummingsfuneral.com/.
