ALEXANDRIA BAY The Alexandria Town Council selected Ronald G. Thomson to fill the vacancy left by the recent departure of Alcid E. Beaudin Jr.
He was selected on a 3-0 vote at a special meeting Wednesday night.
Voting for Mr. Thomson were town Supervisor Dale D. Hunneyman, John Stine and Brent H. Sweet. Gregory L. Wills declined to vote on the matter.
Mr. Thomson, a Republican, was one of two people who had expressed interest in the council position, left open by the departure of Mr. Beaudin, a Democrat. Also interested in the position was Democrat Thomas E. Petrie.
Mr. Hunneyman said Mr. Thomson was picked because of his past government and business expertise.
It wasnt so much keeping it the same party, he said. We based it on qualifications for the job.
Mr. Thomsons experience includes a 12-year stint on the Alexandria Central School District board, from 1994 to 2006. The lifelong town resident also owns multiple area businesses, including Uncle Sam Boat Tours.
The councils decision could spell a future election race. Mr. Thomson and Mr. Petrie relayed to Mr. Hunneyman their plans to run later this year to finish out the term.
The seat will be up for election again in 2015.
