Massena nips OFA on mat

Adam Rickett knew he had to have a pin and his climatic 138-pound bout ended with Massena’s Gavin Perrine holding off the Devil grappler’s determined attempt for a pinning combination. Rickett secured a 7-3 win but Perrine’s ability to avoid a pin or a major decision produced a precious 36-36 tie.

A tie which was broken in the first criteria where Massena prevailed 37-36 by virtue of a 4-3 edge in pins.

“Adam Rickett knew he needed a pin and came close. Coach Mitchell always lets us know if we need a pin to win. We really wanted get a win for coach, he means a lot to us,” said OFA senior Alex Cole after the match where Massena climbed to 5-1 on the season and dropped OFA to 2-3.

Earlier, Coach Mitchell honored Cole and fellow seniors Glynn Breen, Nathan Murdock, Josh Wangler, Cody-Allen David and Jordan McCormick before their last home match.

The seniors in turn presented Coach Mitchell with a framed copy of the Wrestlers Creed and his wife, Pam, with a large quilt.

Coach Mitchell was extremely happy with the gifts and the effort.

“The guys gave it their all and it was a great match. We beat Massena by criteria last year and they turned it around.”

The Blue Devils won the first three bouts as Nathan Murdock (146) nipped Austin Amo 14-13, Bailey Phelps (152) pinned Quinton Coulter 3:20 and Cody Allen-David (160) shaded Dan Elman 6-4.

The Raiders quickly regrouped gaining three pins and a forfeit in the next five bouts. Hunter Perrine (170) posted a 1:39 fall over Allen Smithers and OFA’s Alex Cole (182) answered with an 8-5 decision over Cameron Tarbell. The Raiders then rolled into a 24-14 lead as Jeremey Malone (195) stopped Jordan McCormick at 3:30, DaKota Bernard (220) posted a 1:05 fall over Gurjot Grewal at 220 and Nolan Terrance (285) gained a forfeit.

The Devils responded to gain a 27-24 margin with a forfeit to Cordell David at 99 and a 2:28 pin by Zach Roberts over Brian Plourde at 106. Nathan Marshall (113) created 27-27 tie with a 2-0 victory over Tanner LaPiene on a second period takedown. The two teams then volleyed two pins and two decisions to create the 36-36 tie. OFA’s Brody Sheppard (120) pinned Skyler Cameron at 3:10 and the Raiders’ Alec Denny (126) answered with a 34-second fall over Austin Lalonde.

The Raiders Mike Brown (132) decisioned Josh Wangler 7-3 and Adam Rickett decisioned Gavin Perrine in the 138-pound finale.

In modified action Don Baker, Jake Kenney and Zach Bogardus all registered pins for OFA and Sinclair Babb of Massena posted a win in a varsity exhibition match.
