The search for a new chief executive at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center is underway, though it could be several months before anyone is hired.

Claxton-Hepburn spokeswoman Laura C. Shea said Chief Operating Officer Vicki Perrine and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Gary Hart have been acting as co-CEOs since the resignation of Mark A. Webster at the end of December.

Mr. Webster resigned from the hospital to take a position as the CEO at the Cortland Regional Medical Center in Cortland.

“It’s business as usual at the hospital,” Mrs. Shea said. “We’ve all been doing our jobs for a number of years, and we work well as a team. We’re certainly anxious to get a new CEO, but we’re not sitting around and waiting.”

The hospital’s board of directors has hired health care executive search firm Foley, Proctor and Yoskowitz, Morristown, N.J., to conduct a national search for candidates, Mrs. Shea said.

“The plan is that the search firm will gather all the info about the area, the hospital, and the particular type of person that we’re looking for to fill the position,” she said.

A local search committee composed of members of the board of directors, administrative staff, management and doctors, led by the Rev. Thomas Patterson, will review the applications and make a final selection. Mrs. Shea said Rev. Patterson was on the committee that hired Mr. Webster 10 years ago.

“When we did the search for Mark Webster, that took six to eight months,” Mrs. Shea said. “This could be a long process.”

Mrs. Shea said that so far there are no candidates for the position within the hospital.
