Canton girls clinch regular season hockey banner with win over Massena

MASSENA - The Canton Central girls hockey team capped an impressive final week of the regular season on Friday by claiming sole possession of the Section 10 league banner with a 4-1 win over Massena Central at the Massena Arena.

Blake Orosz netted two goals and helped set up the other two as the Lady Golden Bears rallied from a 1-0 first-intermission deficit to clinch the top seed for the upcoming sectional tournament which gets underway with a pair of semi-final round games on Wednesday. As the number one seed, Canton will get set to host fourth-seeded Salmon River at the Canton Pavilion while Massena drops to the second seed and will take on third-seeded Potsdam Central at the Massena Arena.

Both semi-finals matchups are slated to start at 5:15 p.m. The sectional final is slated for Saturday, February 1, at the home of the highest remaining seed.

In Friday’s game at the Massena Arena, the host Lady Raiders (14-3, 6-2) opened the scoring when Bailey Dillabough broke through for an unassisted power play goal at the 9:30 mark of the first period.

Kelli Cougler tied the game just 30 seconds into the middle frame assisted by Orosz, who struck for the eventual game-winner just 47 seconds later.

Margret Troiano made it 3-1 off an assist from Orosz at 8:36 of the third before Orosz sealed the win when she converted on a play set up by Natalie Giglio with 3:45 remaining.

Elizabeth Burke made 22 saves for Canton (12-4-1, 6-1-1) while Maddi Dillabough turned aside 23 shots for Massena (14-3, 6-2).

The Lady Raiders close out their regular season with a non-league game against Bellows Free Academy this morning at 11:45 a.m. at the Massena Arena.
