Some color is headed to Ogdensburg this spring as the city Pride and Beautification Commission prepares to help three homes get a fresh paint job.

Commission Chairwoman Mary Ann Narenkivicius said commission members hope to paint three homes free of charge in relatively high-traffic areas this year.

It’s the first time the commission has done something on this scale, and Mrs. Narenkivicius said the plan is to make it a yearly project, gradually freshening up the city.

The project doesn’t include any repairs or construction, just painting.

Mrs. Narenkivicius said the project began in October when several people with the Ogdensburg Kiwanis Club stepped forward to volunteer their time and supplies to paint homes in the city.

The Ogdensburg Free Academy Key Club will also be helping out.

“Our mission is to help beautify Ogdensburg,” Mrs. Narenkivicius said, “so as citizens we will feel more proud of how we look.”

The project will be overseen by a local contractor, who wishes to remain anonymous for now, Mrs. Narenkivicius said. There are no hard and fast rules for homes to be included in the project.

Mrs. Narenkivicius said the project is open to anyone in any income bracket.

The only stipulation is that commission members want to begin the project this year with homes on one of the city’s main drags, and they hope to tackle three homes that are close together for maximum visual impact.

“We’re hoping to get it done in two weekends, weather permitting, in the spring,” Mrs. Narenkivicius said.

Anyone who wants a free paint job should submit a photo of their home, their name, address and phone number by Feb. 28 to the Ogdensburg Pride and Beautification Commission c/o Mary Ann Narenkivicius, 634 State St., Ogdensburg, N.Y., 13669.

The project is open to single- and multi-family homes, but the application needs to be submitted by the property owner. Volunteers from the community are also needed, Mrs. Narenkivicius said, and anyone who is interested or who wants more information should call her at 276-4915.
