Lake-effect snow watch in effect in Jefferson, Lewis counties

The National Weather Service has issued a lake-effect snow watch for Jefferson and Lewis counties from late tonight through Wednesday morning and is calling for more than two feet of snow in areas.

The “prolonged event” is expected to bring significant accumulations as well as create blowing snow and whiteout conditions at times, making travel across much of the north country and Interstate 81 difficult, the advisory states.

In the Watertown area, snow is expected to start tonight between 7 p.m. and midnight, with about four to seven inches accumulating by Monday afternoon.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office has issued a travel advisory for the entire county starting at 9 p.m. due to blowing snow and snow-covered roads.

Though the wind chill warning has been lifted for Jefferson and Lewis counties, it remains in effect in St. Lawrence County. The service warns of wind chills as low as 29 below.
