Thomas J. Dywan

Thomas J. Dywan, 69, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at his home in Thunderbolt, GA, with his sweetheart, Judy O’Brien, at his bedside. Tom had suffered from heart disease for 17 years. In 2013 he received an LVAD implant at MCCG in Macon, Ga. Despite repeated medical interventions and the efforts of brilliant doctors, Tom’s battle ended this past Tuesday.

Tom was raised in Massena, NY, the son of the late Joseph and Jean Lizette Dywan. He graduated from Massena Central High School in 1962, and received a degree in Forestry from Paul Smith’s College.

For more than 20 years Tom worked at Kodak in Rochester, but always preferred the simpler life of the North Country. He met Judy O’Brien, the love of his life, in 1986. They ran the Madrid Hotel for 11 years before moving to Georgia in 1999.

Tom and Judy returned as often as they could to their “fixer-upper” in Nicholville, NY. Tom always had multiple projects in progress. He collected hundreds of tools, but never could find the one he needed. Tom endured many misadventures and could always turn them into a funny story.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Judy, and her children, especially Kelly and Shannon, who considered Tom their Dad. Tom was a great and much-loved big brother to his sisters: Nancy (Sr. Jean, l.s.p., St. Louis, MO), Susan (Bernard) Klotz, Centerville, MA, Judy Dywan, Canton, Diane St. Thomas and her partner Gary Gagne, Massena. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, as well as 8 nieces and 4 nephews.

Tom had a good life. He was thoughtful and kind. He maintained hope to the end. His family will miss his frequent upbeat phone calls. He loved people and animals, especially dogs. In Tom’s memory, donations to the Potsdam Humane Society, 17 Madrid Avenue, Potsdam, NY 13676, would be appreciated.

His body will be donated to Med Cure for medical research.
