Mary Elizabeth Balcom, 86, Strawberry Lane, Clayton passed away Friday, January 24, 2014, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

Calling hours will be at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton on Wednesday, January 29, from 4 - 7PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Clayton on Thursday, January 30, at 11AM with Rev. Pierre Aubin officiating. Burial in Grindstone Island Cemetery will be at a time and date to be announced.

Mrs. Balcom was born in Alexandria Bay on March 28, 1927, daughter of Joseph Harold and Elizabeth Hill Hunt. She attended Alexandria Bay Elementary and graduated from Clayton High School.

On October 2, 1948 she married Lawrence C. “Lince” Balcom at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. George Racette officiating. Lince died on August 26, 2004.

She had worked as a clerk at River Rat Cheese Store, Clayton and at Sea Mist Marina, Boynton Beach, FL, where she and her husband had wintered.

Mary Elizabeth was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, taught religious education classes, and sang at many funerals. She was also a member of the Community Choir. She was a member of both the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Auxiliaries, and had been a Girl Scout Leader and on the Voting Board.

With Bernice Wagner, she was co-founder of Clayton Meals on Wheels program. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, singing, Bingo, boating, and was the River Mail Boat operator for several years. She especially enjoyed her afternoons socializing at the Clayton Subway.

She is survived by her five children, Teresa “Terry” Wright and husband, Stephen G. Bull, Clayton, NY and Clayton, GA, Edward “Huck” Balcom and companion, Kathy Prouty, Cape Vincent, Beverly Morisey and husband, Pat, Clayton, Joseph Balcom and wife, Maria, Clayton, and Eileen “Urch” Slate and husband, Harry, Grindstone Island; thirteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her husband, Lince, she was predeceased by her daughter, Elizabeth “Bobbie” Balcom Riedel, 2008, her grandson, Harrison Lawrence Slate, and her two brothers, Peter Hunt, 1985, and Tim Hunt, 2003.
