More snow predicted after heavy snowfall Monday closes roadways

More lake-effect snow is expected today across the region after a heavy snowfall closed portions of Interstate 81 in Oswego County and other roads Monday.

The National Weather Service on Monday afternoon updated its advisory for Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties, saying that the area could get 4 to 8 inches today, and an additional 3 to 6 inches tonight.

In St. Lawrence County, the service estimated that locations south of DeKalb could get up to 8 inches of snow. Snowy conditions are anticipated to continue until Wednesday morning.

Warning of potential low visibility, the service also advised that roads until then will be “very difficult to nearly impossible” to travel.

The conditions follow a hazardous Monday during which several vehicle accidents were reported.

Southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Oswego County were closed between exit 37, Sandy Creek, and exit 36, Pulaski, for more than two hours during the late morning and early afternoon.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office initially issued a “no unnecessary travel” advisory for Route 177 between Route 12 and the Lewis-Jefferson county line, but a few hours later downgraded it to a regular travel advisory.

In St. Lawrence County, Route 68 was reopened about 1:15 p.m. after being closed for two hours between Flackville and Ogdensburg because of whiteout conditions.
