Morristown Town Council offers code enforcement position to Christopher Sherwin

MORRISTOWN - A new code enforcement officer may soon be employed by the town of Morristown after nearly two months of searching in the wake of the departure of Valerie Harman.

At Tuesday’s special meeting the town council voted to offer the position to Christopher J. Sherwin.

Mrs. Harman had been the code enforcement officer since February of 2013 and left for personal reasons.

“We’re going to offer it to [Mr. Sherwin] but we don’t know that [he is] going to take it,” Town Supervisor Frank L. Putman said.

Mr. Sherwin is currently employed as code enforcement officer for the town of Lisbon where he works 19 per week and makes roughly $23,000 per year.

If he accepts the position in Morristown he will be working 30 hours per week and make $27,000.

Mr. Putman described the situation as “touchy” because the town council isn’t certain that Mr. Sherwin will be able to take the job.

Mr. Putman would not comment on why the town council picked Mr. Sherwin over the 9 other candidates that applied for the job, saying that because the council discussed the matter in executive session it was a closed issue.

Mr. Sherwin applied for the position in late 2012 as well but the town ultimately decided to bring Mrs. Harman onboard.

Mr. Sherwin could not be reached Tuesday night for comment.

Assuming he accepts the position Mr. Putman said Mr. Sherwin could begin as soon as two weeks from now.

Currently Oswegatchie Code Enforcement Officer Timothy C. Tuttle is helping out Morristown at a rate of roughly $2,500 per month.
