MASSENA Employees of the Alcoa East Plant will hear about the future of their jobs today, following an agreement reached Wednesday between Alcoa and the United Steelworkers Local 450-A.
Local 450-A President David W. LaClair Jr. said the union will hold meetings at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. today at the community center on Beech Street to discuss the options available to its members. He said any employee who cannot attend can call the union hall at 769-7510 for information.
Alcoa announced Jan. 15 that it will shut down the final two potlines at the former Reynolds Metals plant, where 332 workers are employed.
Details of the settlement were withheld Wednesday pending notification of the union members.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomos administration has pressed the company to avoid involuntary layoffs. Retirement incentives were expected to be offered to reduce the workforce.
