Gouverneur police officer hearing is adjourned

GOUVERNEUR — The hearing for suspended village police officer Steven M. Young, scheduled for today, is adjourned because his attorney, James R. McGraw of Syracuse, died last week.

The hearing probably will take place in March, but a date has not been set yet and the village does not have official notice of Mr. Young’s new attorney.

“We anticipate based on the change of attorneys that the hearing will be adjourned for some time and Mr. Young’s suspension will continue without pay,” Village Attorney Henry J. Leader said.

The board suspended Mr. Young without pay, effective Dec. 30. He had been suspended with pay since September pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations of misconduct.

State police investigators have refused to comment on their investigation into whether Mr. Young, who is also chief of the Gouverneur Fire Department, inappropriately used village gasoline.

The village proceeded with administrative charges against Mr. Young and scheduled the Civil Service hearing.
