SLU men edge Union at Appleton to end winless skid


CANTON — Freshman defenseman Mike Graham scored the deciding goal 8 minutes, 10 seconds into the third period and St. Lawrence University went on to edge fourth-ranked Union College, 2-1, on Friday night in an ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena as the Saints halted their winless skid at nine games.

Freshman forward Drew Smolcynski scored in the second period and senior goalie Matt Weninger made 22 saves as St. Lawrence (9-13-3, 3-7-3) won for the first time since Nov. 29.

The Saints, who blocked nine shots in shutting down the Dutchmen (16-6-3, 10-3-0) for much of the game, also won for the first time in nine league games.

Daniel Carr scored a goal in the third period to become Union’s all-time leader in points.

Colin Stevens finished with 33 saves for the Dutchmen, who entered leading the ECAC.

SUNY Brockport 4, SUNY Potsdam 1: Jared Lockhurst made 38 saves as the Golden Eagles (6-9-3, 3-5-1) used a pair of power-play goals to down the Bears for a SUNYAC victory in Brockport.

Max Fogel tallied for SUNY Potsdam (6-12-0, 1-8-0).


SLU 56, William Smith 48: Kelly Legg scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the St. Lawrence University women’s basketball team beat William Smith to move into a tie for first place in the Liberty League.

Cassie St. Hilaire and Carolina Dalton each added eight points for the Saints (10-6, 6-1), who are tied with the Herons.

Erin O’Brien led all scorers with 20 points for William Smith (14-4, 7-2).

RIT 51, Clarkson 49: Ashlynn Palmitesso sank a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left as the Tigers edged the Golden Knights in Liberty League play at Potsdam.

Courtney Tennant led Rochester Institute of Technology (9-7, 5-2) with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Ashley Loggins scored 18 points for Clarkson (7-7, 2-4).

SUNY New Paltz 76, SUNY Potsdam 66: Christine Rivera scored 21 points as New Paltz earned a SUNYAC victory at Potsdam.

Shannan Walker added 15 points for New Paltz (4-14, 2-9), which led 37-32 at halftime.

Jessica Kouzan scored a game-high 22 points for the Bears (4-13, 2-8).

SUNY Canton 53, College of St. Joseph 47: Alicia Uhlein netted 15 points as the Kangaroos held off the Fighting Saints (7-8) in Canton.

Massena Central product Janelle Bradish produced a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds for SUNY Canton (4-13).


Clarkson 77, RIT 59: Marques Charlton produced a game-high 28 points as the Golden Knights beat the Tigers for a Liberty League win at Potsdam.

John Coleman contributed 15 points for Clarkson (9-7, 3-4).

Jameel Balenton and Miguel Lopez each recorded 10 points for Rochester Institute of Technology (10-6, 4-3).

Hobart 68, SLU 60: Richie Bonney’s double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds helped the Statesmen pull away in the second half to down the Saints in a Liberty League matchup at Canton.

Connor Rehbaum also scored 16 points for league-leading Hobart (14-4, 8-1).

Massena’s Brady Condlin led all scorers with 19 points for St. Lawrence (6-10, 2-5).

SUNY Potsdam 86, SUNY New Paltz 81: Joe Estramonte and Zac Adams each scored 17 points as the Bears (3-14, 1-9) outlasted the Hawks for a SUNYAC win in Potsdam.

Keegan Donovan led all scorers with 27 points for SUNY New Paltz (6-12, 3-8).

SUNY Canton 84, College of St. Joseph 79:

Sam Annorh scored 20 points as the Kangaroos used a late run to beat the Fighting Saints (10-12) in Canton.

Khalil Bratton added 16 points for SUNY Canton (5-11).


Clarkson 5, Union 0: Jamie Lee Rattray collected five points, including four assists, as the Golden Knights blanked the Dutchwomen (8-18-1, 3-12-0) in ECAC play at Schenectady.

Vanessa Gagnon scored twice for Clarkson (20-4-3, 11-2-2), which did not allow a shot after the first period.

SLU 4, Rensselaer 2: Dayle Wilkinson and Kirsten Padalis scored power-play goals in the second period as the Saints beat the Engineers in an ECAC contest at Troy.

Mel Desrochers handed out a pair of assists for St. Lawrence (8-14-3, 7-5-3).

Jordan Smelker and Mari Mankey each scored for Rensselaer (10-14-2, 6-8-1).
