OGDENSBURG The Frederic Remington Art Museum has hired a new director of development who will be responsible for membership growth, building new partnerships with other museums across the nation and raising funds.
Melanie E. Flack started Monday and said she is very excited to come on board with the museum.
Its a treasure in our community, she said.
The new position will also see Ms. Flack managing the museums store.
Museum Director and Curator Laura A. Foster said the shop managers position has been vacant since September and in the interest of consolidation the museum decided to merge that position with the director of development.
We took this opportunity to re-envision our goals, she said.
Mrs. Foster said Ms. Flack will spend roughly 50 percent of her time with the shop and the other half of her time divided equally between membership development and fundraising.
This year, for instance, Ms. Flack will be in charge of the museums annual gala.
This will relieve a great deal of stress from our very small staff, Mrs. Foster said. We feel just wildly rich now.
Mrs. Foster said she is excited by the opportunity to begin growing the museums membership.
We really havent been in a position to build membership in a long time, she said. In 2013, for the first time in years, we finished the year in the black. We have had a lot of introspection and consolidation. We are a fierce, lean machine.
Mrs. Foster said Ms. Flacks position will allow the other museum employees to maintain their focus on programming.
The main thing that we do is really about the program, its about exhibits and education and art – not about raising money, Mrs. Foster said.
For her part Ms. Flack said she is particularly excited about the opportunity to see the museum grow.
Mrs. Foster said they will also be launching a renewed effort to expand their brand nationally and internationally.
There is a national and international interest in Frederic Remington and a demand for some of the retail items that we make, Mrs. Foster said, adding the Ms. Flack will be working to see how much placement of our wonderful merchandise we can have in some of the great art museums in the west.
